These run term time. Note our dates might not match your local authorities. We often offer additional summer school sessions on tough topics.

HAVE THESE REPLACED THE DROP IN Q&A SESSIONS?

Yes, due to low attendance.

HOW DO I KNOW WHAT IS COVERED EACH WEEK?

All students (regardless of whether they are attending live sessions) are encouraged to follow the timetables provided. Find these under the 'pre-coursework and timetables' tab of your student dashboard. The live sessions will follow these timetables. If you wish to complete in one year, some weeks you will need to complete 2 or 3 lessons. The tutor in the live session will move through these with you at a faster pace to mirror your faster completion time.

CAN I ATTEND ANY LIVE SESSION?

You can attend any live session you wish in the subject(s) you are enrolled for. If you want to ‘dip in and out’ refer to the timetables to find what will be covered that week. You can drop back if you are struggling and move ahead if you need to via the recorded lessons. By the end everyone will have completed the same content.

DO I NEED TO PREPARE FOR LIVE SESSIONS?

Before you start the course (live or not) please complete the pre-coursework 'maths for IGCSE science' and 'perfect practicals'. If you cannot complete before the start date aim to finish at your leisure, but do not miss it.

Physics students taking the course in one year via live sessions will need to have completed the crash course in formulas before attending. This is mandatory!

DO I NEED MY VIDEO AND MICROPHONE ON?

No.

Video is optional. Microphones must be off, unless requested otherwise (which is always optional). This avoids disruption.

HOW ARE LIVE SESSIONS STRUCTURED?

A tutor will guide you through the existing course.

They will work through the existing videos (and sometimes assignments) live. Interactive quizzes may also play a part.

Students will need a pen, pencil, calculator and paper as routine. Occasionally we will ask for more, such as graph paper and optional printed worksheets.

We hope students will feel confident to answer questions the tutor poses in the chat bar. Students will never be 'singled out'.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS A LIVE SESSION?

Please complete the pre-recorded video and online assignment for that lesson before attending the next live session.

are sessions recorded?

Yes. However, these will be available only upon request. They cover the existing course, so it would be more time effective to work through that if a session is missed.

IS THERE HOMEWORK?

Yes, this will be the online assignment and possible additional written assignments shown in that week’s folder.

HOW DO I TRACK MY CHILD'S PROGRESS?

1. Ensure they attend the session each week and/or watch the video.

2. Ensure they complete the homework / assignment for that week.

3. We will run a parent's evening once every half term showing you how to track your child's progress via their dashboard.

WHO ARE THE TUTORS?

Dr Steven Hepplestone will take live sessions this academic year. The course creator, and qualified teacher, Jo will be available live via chat to answer any questions Steven misses.

We aim not to miss any session. In the event of Steve's illness (or otherwise), Jo or Cherry will take the session. Details on tutor's can be found here.

WHERE CAN I ACCESS ADDITIONAL SUPPORT?

Message 'tutor' on your dashboard. Find this via the speech bubble at the top right. This has the fastest response rate.

HOW MANY STUDENTS ATTEND EACH SESSION?

We do not limit attendance. Prepare for large numbers, but in the past we have never risen above 20 participants.

Please note, we need a minimum attendance to continue live sessions.

CAN SIBLINGS ATTEND?

Yes, for free. However, if you wish siblings to have their own account to complete assignments, record grades and take advantage of marking please purchase a £25 subsidised sibling account in the online shop. This is £25 per subject.

CAN I USE A FAKE NAME IN THE LIVE SESSIONS?

No. Please use your real name, surname or SWSS username on your account. We cannot prevent students private messaging each other during sessions. It is important we have a record of who attends for protection purposes.

any further questions please get in touch before the sessions. we won't be taking admin questions during science sessions. thank you!
